The Fochteloërveen Dutch Crane Resort is one of the last remaining high peat bog areas in Europe. It is managed by Natuurmonumenten.
Recently the terrain has been extended and merged with other small areas of natural beauty. Thus a large area was created where there is enough space for visitors but also enough peace and quiet to make the area attractive to the breeding crane.
To have a look at the shy crane and other birds there are an 18 meter high watchtower and several bird hides in the area.
There is a nice bicycle tour that goes from Op De Knolle, through the Fochteloërveen and the Bankenbos to Veenhuizen.
Please have a look at the English summery of the website of Natuurmonumenten.
